A 27 year old who trains hard and tracks macros, but cannot find an app that knows what omena is, how much protein is in githeri, or whether her body actually absorbs the iron in her spinach smoothie.

5:30am, Smart Gym Westlands

Zuri racks the barbell after her last set of squats. The gym is half-empty at 5:30am -- just her, two men on the bench press, and a woman on the treadmill. She checks the time. Forty-five minutes until she needs to be showered and on her way to the office in Kilimani. She pulls out her phone, opens MyFitnessPal, and tries to log her breakfast: two boiled eggs, a cup of uji made with wimbi flour, and a banana. The eggs log fine. Uji with wimbi -- no result. She searches "millet porridge" and gets an American entry for Bob's Red Mill. She closes the app. This happens every morning.

Zuri is trying to hit 100 grams of protein a day. At 60 kilograms bodyweight, that is 1.7 grams per kilo -- the minimum for muscle building. Her protein strategy is built from local foods she has figured out through trial and error: eggs at KES 20 each, four per day for 25 grams. Chicken breast from City Market, 25 grams per 100 grams. Soya beans, the best protein-per-shilling ratio she has found. Omena when she can face it three times a week. She meal preps on Sundays -- boiled eggs in a container, chicken portioned in bags, cooked beans in a jar. Her gym membership costs KES 8,000 a month. A container of whey protein from Jumia costs KES 5,500. She spends more on fitness than most people she knows spend on rent.

What Zuri does not know is that the protein grams she counts are not the protein grams her body uses. Beans have a protein digestibility score of 50-65%. Eggs score 113%. Her post-workout protein is not equal just because the grams match -- animal protein is absorbed 40-50% more efficiently. She does not know that omena -- the small dried fish she dismisses as old-fashioned -- is a complete protein with a digestibility score comparable to beef, plus calcium, omega-3, and heme iron. It is the most underrated training food in Kenya. She does not know that pressure-cooking her beans, the way she already does on Sundays, improves their protein digestibility by 10-15% compared to open-pot boiling. She counts everything. Her body absorbs less than she thinks, and the cheapest fix is a fish her grandmother ate.

Zuri is not extreme or obsessive. She is an athlete operating with incomplete data. Every fitness meal plan she finds online assumes she eats oats, Greek yogurt, and turkey breast. There is no meal plan built from githeri, omena, and ndengu. No app that scores a plate of mukimo for protein quality. She is not doing anything wrong. She is missing one piece of information: the difference between the nutrients she swallows and the nutrients her body actually uses.

I count everything -- protein, carbs, calories. But no app I have tried has ever heard of omena.

You have counted 30 grams of protein from beans and assumed it was the same as 30 grams from eggs -- not knowing your body absorbs less than half the bean protein. You have dismissed omena as old-fashioned, not knowing it matches beef for protein digestibility and adds calcium, omega-3, and heme iron. You spend KES 15,000 a month on gym membership, supplements, and high-protein food, but you have no way to verify whether your body is using what you are paying for.

You are not doing anything wrong. You are missing one thing: a nutrition tool that knows Kenyan food and shows you the difference between what you eat and what your body absorbs.

Same macros, different math

Zuri opens Timiya after her Sunday meal prep. She logs her Monday meals: uji with wimbi and eggs for breakfast, chicken and rice for lunch, ugali with beans and sukuma wiki for dinner. The app does not say "cornmeal porridge" or "dried fish, generic." It knows ugali from Jogoo, wimbi from the supermarket shelf. The protein score comes back: 82 grams absorbed out of 104 grams consumed. She is eighteen grams short of her target -- not because she ate too little, but because the bean protein at dinner has a digestibility score of 53%, meaning her body discards nearly half of it.

The app suggests two swaps: replace the plain rice at lunch with githeri -- beans and maize together form a complete protein, pushing her lunch PDCAAS from 0.45 to 0.80. And add omena to two dinners a week instead of beans alone -- omena's digestibility matches beef at 90-100%, plus she gets calcium, omega-3, and heme iron that enhances absorption from the ugali. She tries it. Logs the week. Absorbed protein: 103 grams daily average. Same grocery bill. The difference is knowing which Kenyan foods her body actually uses.

She screenshots the bioavailability breakdown and posts it to her gym's WhatsApp group. Two friends download the app before the evening session. The supplement store gets one fewer visit this month.
